Meet Sandvik at AMUG 2019

AMUGlogotag.jpgSandvik Additive Manufacturing is one of the sponsors of the upcoming AMUG Conference (Additive Manufacturing Users Group), in Chicago, Illinois, March 31 – April 4, 2019.

AMUG is a high-level technical conference which brings together engineers, designers, technicians, supervisors, plant managers and educators from around the world to share expertise, best practices, challenges, and application developments in additive manufacturing.

Thinking beyond printing for full additive manufacturing value

As metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) evolves from prototyping to serial production, several technical challenges need to be resolved to accelerate adoption of the technology across a wider range of markets.

While much attention in the additive arena focuses on revolutionary designs and the printing technologies, innovation at material level is equally important – as well as the most optimal post processing methods for each AM-component. With more than 150 years in the metal industry, Sandvik has well-established and leading expertise across the whole AM-value chain: Materials, Printing and Post Processing. And with our leading Osprey™ metal powders we also offer the widest range of AM-alloys around – including materials customized to demanding applications.

Title: Binder jet process development of MIM grade special steel powder
Presenter: Dr Magnus Boström, Senior R&D Engineer, Binder Jetting

Room: Salon D, Booth #D13
Time: 1:30 PM-2:00 PM

Printing is only one of seven steps you need to master to obtain a perfect AM component. The steps before and after the printing are equally important. Material knowledge, including inhouse powder development and production, is often key to be able to master the whole AM-value chain.

In Sandvik’s presentation at AMUG, “Thinking beyond printing for full additive manufacturing value” (presented by Dr. Mikael Schuisky, VP R&D and Operations and Keith Murray, Business Development Manager and Powder Expert) customer cases will be shared, such as advanced coolant clamps for turning applications, light weight mills for reduction of vibrations when machining with long overhangs, and advanced sliding cases for down the hole hammers in the mining industry. It will describe the journey going from R&D to serial production, including some of the challenges faced.

From a materials perspective, we will describe the importance of optimizing the alloy design to deliver the required material properties for the chosen AM technology. Another important area is the refinement of the AM-powder’s physical properties to ensure predictable and consistent behavior, throughout the build process – as well as over multiple build cycles.

One of Sandvik’s Binder Jet Experts, Dr Magnus Boström, will also give a presentation on binder jet process development of MIM (Metal Injection Moulding) special steel powder.
